42 Naval Gun
The 5-Inch 54-Caliber Mk 42 Naval Gun was developed
and manufactured by United Defense. The Mk 42 Naval Gun is widely deployed,
with more than 70 applications in 10 international fleets. United Defense-Louisville
is the In-Service Engineering Agent (ISEA)-certified depot-level overhaul
point for Mk 42 systems now serving in international fleets. United Defense-Louisville
is also ISEA-certified for repair, overhaul, upgrade, and logistics support
center for the Mk 42 Gun Fire Control System Mk 68.Destroyers and frigates
equipped with the Mk 42 Naval Gun have an effective weapon for antisurface,
fire support, and strike warfare missions. The Mk 42 Naval Gun has the
capability to rapidly fire all semifixed 5-inch 54-caliber ammunitions
with point detonation, proximity, and mechanically timed fuze configurations.
The
Mk 42 Naval Gun consists of two component groups: the lower structure (below
deck) and the upper structure (above deck). Lower structure components
include parallel 2-stage hoist/loader drum arrangements that deliver an
uninterrupted flow of ammunition to the gun. Upper structure components
load the ammunition, aim the gun, fire the ammunition, and eject the empty
powder cases.
